Water Recreation — Kayaking Adventure

Loon Rescue
Caption:

This is the first photo in a series of the Loon rescue. As we neared the bay heading into the boat landing for our half-way lunch break, Jeff noticed something strange struggling in the water. As Jeff approached he could tell it was a Loon with its neck half twisted around and called in the tow boat for help. A large fishing net was used to capture the Loon. Once in the net we could see this beautiful bird had a steel leader wrapped around its beak with its two treble hooks lodged deeply in its body and wing. We snipped the leader between the hooks to free the beak but the bird was a fighter and difficult to control. We were compelled to get the bird some medical help to remove the hooks. So Jeff wrapped up the bird in a shirt holding it securely and we towed his kayak into shore at Fishers Camp. The DNR was called on the way in by a fisherman. We were hoping a game warden was nearby and a feathered-friend doctor just another phone call away. Wishful thinking.
